Stow-on-the-Wold at a glance

The centre of Stow is the Market Square, with the market cross and St Edward's Hall. Do not mix up the hall and the church: St Edward's Hall is a building on the square, while the church of St Edward is the one with the famous door.

The town makes an easy stop, with a free car park, a charged one and a bus that links it with Bourton-on-the-Water and Moreton-in-Marsh.

What to see in Stow

Both sights are around the square.

The Market Square

The Market Square is the open space at the heart of the town. Walk round it to see the market cross and St Edward's Hall, then follow the streets leading off it.

The north door of St Edward's church

The north door is framed by old yew trees and is a popular place for photographs. Do not count on getting inside. Opening times and the rules for visitors can change, and services may close the church. If the door is busy, wait your turn and keep the path clear.

Getting to Stow by bus

The Pulhams 801 connects Cheltenham, Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold, Moreton-in-Marsh and Chipping Norton. On a sample Monday to Friday journey, the bus leaves Cheltenham Royal Well at 08:30, reaches Bourton at 09:15, calls at Stow Library at 09:33 and arrives at Moreton-in-Marsh station at 09:45. That is about 18 minutes from Bourton to Stow and 12 minutes from Stow to the station. Not every bus runs to Chipping Norton, and Sunday has a separate timetable. The timetable applies from 3 May 2026, so check the current version before you travel.

Eligible local Pulhams single fares are capped at £3 until 31 December 2026, including child fares. If you take several rides, a CotswoldZone day ticket costs adults £8 in the app and £8.50 on the bus. Check the zone map first. From 26 July 2026 Pulhams also offers contactless tap-on and tap-off with its Freeflow system. If you forget to tap off, you are charged to the end of the route.

From London, trains run from Paddington to Moreton-in-Marsh. A booking site shows direct services with a fastest journey of 1 hour 24 minutes and advance fares from £14 one way, as of 20 October 2026. Those fares are limited and indicative, so check availability for your date.

Walks near Stow

For a longer outing, take the bus to Bourton-on-the-Water and walk to the Slaughters. An official walk sheet describes a 5 km (3.2 miles) route that takes about 2 hours. You cross the busy Fosse Way, so take care. Our Bourton-on-the-Water page has the details.

For a multi-day walk, the Cotswold Way starts in Chipping Campden and runs 102 miles (164 km) to Bath. Read our Cotswold Way guide for stages and planning.

Keep to signed paths, close gates behind you and stay at least 10 m (33 ft) from livestock where you can. Keep your dog on a lead unless signs say otherwise.
