Things to Do in the Cotswolds

Fifteen things worth planning around, from free village walks to ticketed castles and gardens. Prices are for adults in 2026 and several places close for the winter.

Fifteen experiences, not a ranking

This list mixes villages, buildings, gardens and walking. It is an editorial selection, not an official ranking, and it is not a one-day program. Places are far apart, so pick two or three for a day and leave the rest for another trip.

Free sights such as the villages cost nothing to see, but parking often does. Paid attractions have their own prices and seasons, and you should not assume that a ticket for a village covers an attraction inside it. Check the opening times for your date before you set off.

Villages and rivers (1 to 5)

Mostly free to see. Go early or late if you want the streets to yourself.

1. See Arlington Row in Bibury

The row is owned by the National Trust, but the houses are private homes and cannot be visited inside. It was probably built around 1380 as a monastic wool store and turned into weavers' cottages in the 17th century. A flat path runs in front, with a narrow bridge and tight spots near Rack Isle. Dogs stay on a lead.

2. Walk through Castle Combe

The visitor car park is pay-and-display, reached by Dunns Lane from the B4039. Read the signs for charges. Coaches may not enter the village centre. Some streets are narrow and have no pavement, so watch children and dogs. Please do not fly drones.

3. Visit the Model Village in Bourton

Adults pay £4.95 and visitors over 60 pay £4.50 in 2026. Children aged 3 to 13 pay between £4 and £4.50, depending on the source, so confirm the price at the gate. Children under 3 are free. It opens 10 am to 5:30 pm in summer time and 10 am to 3:30 pm in winter, and you pay on site.

Bourton-on-the-Water →

4. Stroll through Lower Slaughter

Lower Slaughter lies on the River Eye, a tributary of the Windrush. An official walk sheet describes a 3.2 mile (5 km) circuit between the Slaughters and Bourton, planned at about 2 hours. It crosses the busy Fosse Way, so cross with care.

5. Cross the ford at Upper Slaughter

The River Eye connects Upper and Lower Slaughter. The two are different villages, which matters when you book a hotel: Lords of the Manor is in Upper Slaughter.

Towns, towers and walks (6 to 10)

Places for a longer stop, with a few opening times to check.

6. Photograph the north door at Stow-on-the-Wold

The north door of St Edward's Church is framed by old yew trees. It is said to have inspired Tolkien, but treat that as a local story. The market square next to it has a market cross and St Edward's Hall. Parking on Fosseway is free. Maugersbury Road costs £4.40 for 2 hours.

Stow-on-the-Wold →

7. Look at the Market Hall in Chipping Campden

The Market Hall on the High Street was built in 1627 for Sir Baptist Hicks. Repairs after vehicle damage are finished, so there is no building site to expect. The Market Square car park charges from 7 am to 7 pm, with the first 20 minutes free and £2 for 2 hours.

Chipping Campden →

8. Climb Broadway Tower

The museum, the roof platform and the country park are part of one ticket, and you arrive at your reserved time. From April to October it opens daily 10 am to 5 pm, with last entry at 4:45 pm. Parking is £3 for up to 4 hours and £6 for the day. Check the current admission price when you book.

9. Step into Burford Church

St John the Baptist stands on Church Green. Visits are possible Monday to Saturday 10 am to 4 pm and Sunday 1 pm to 4 pm, except at Christmas, Easter and New Year. Services can stop visits. Printed guides are free, and the church asks for donations. The Guildenford car park is free for up to 4 hours.

Burford →

10. Walk part of the Cotswold Way

The National Trail runs 102 miles (164 km) from Chipping Campden to Bath. A good first section is the 6 miles (9.6 km) from Chipping Campden to Broadway, past Dover's Hill and Broadway Tower. The trail is open all year, with steep climbs.

Big days out (11 to 15)

Ticketed places that take two to four hours or more. Prices are for 2026.

11. Spend a day at Blenheim Palace

Palace, Park and Gardens costs £41 for adults and £24 for children aged 3 to 16 online, or £44 and £27 at the gate. The family ticket for two adults and two children is £110 online. Park and Gardens without the palace is £31 online. The park opens daily 9 am to 6 pm, but check the separate palace hours.

12. Tour Sudeley Castle

Adults pay £24, visitors aged 60 and over £23, and children aged 3 to 15 £10.50. The family ticket is £59.50 for two adults and up to three children. The season runs from 14 March to early November 2026. The castle closes at 4 pm and the grounds at 5 pm. Tickets are not refundable, and National Trust or English Heritage cards give no discount.

13. Visit the gardens at Hidcote

From 14 March to 1 November 2026 adults pay £20 and children aged 5 to 17 pay £10, without Gift Aid. National Trust members and children under 5 are free. From 2 November to 31 December the adult price is £12. Dogs are allowed on a short lead, but not in the Old Garden or the Manor House.

14. Plan for the lavender fields

The 2026 season ran from 11 June to 5 August. The fields have been harvested and are closed to visitors until mid-June 2027, and no exact opening date is set yet. In 2026 peak adult tickets cost £7.75 and children aged 5 to 15 paid £3.50. Payment was on site, by card only.

15. See the autumn colour at Westonbirt Arboretum

Near Tetbury, the arboretum asks for advance booking from 25 September to 15 November 2026. Adults pay £19 on weekdays and £22 at weekends and on bank holidays. Children aged 5 to 18 pay £5, and children under 5 are free. Reduced prices are £13 and £15.50.
