Three ways to see the Cotswolds from London

The Cotswolds lie west of London, and the villages are spread out. A guided day tour solves the main problem of the area, which is moving between places that have no direct link. The alternatives are the train plus local buses, or a hired car.

Two programs are described below, one that starts in Oxford and one that stays in the villages. Details can change by season and date, so use the figures as a guide and check the operator's page for your day. The list of tours further down shows live prices and availability.

By train and local bus

Great Western Railway runs direct trains from London Paddington to three useful stations. The fares below are advertised advance prices for one way. They are indicative, availability is limited, and they are not a full day's cost. Ask the operator for current fares and the timetable for your date.

Moreton-in-Marsh1 h 24 min1 h 33 min£14
Charlbury1 h 5 min1 h 16 min£12
Kemble–1 h 13 min£20

From Moreton-in-Marsh, Pulhams route 801 serves Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water and Cheltenham. Not every bus runs as far as Chipping Norton, and Sunday has a separate timetable. Eligible local single fares are capped at £3 until 31 December 2026. The CotswoldZone day ticket costs £8 for adults in the app and £8.50 on the bus. Check the zone map before you rely on it.

Which option suits you?

The trade-off is simple: convenience against flexibility.

Choose a tour if

You have one day, no car and no wish to read bus timetables. The tour carries the transport and the route. You give up control over how long you stay in each village.

Choose train and bus if

You want to pick your own villages and can plan around the timetable. The landscape body describes car-free travel as possible but demanding, and there is no continuous link between all the villages. Base yourself in one town and walk from there.

Choose a car if

You want several villages in a day. Parking is the limit. Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold charge £4.40 for 2 hours, Burford's Guildenford car park is free for up to 4 hours, and Bibury has only limited free parking along the road.

What to check before you book

These details differ between tours and are easy to miss.

Departure point

Find out where the coach leaves and when you must board. One program boards at Victoria Coach Station at 8:00 am.

Food and tickets

Lunch, drinks and entry fees are often extra. Christ Church in Oxford, for example, is an optional entry on one program.

Stops and time

Ask which villages are visited and how long you stay. Neither published program guarantees a set time in each place.

Cancellation

One program offers free cancellation up to at least 24 hours before. Terms differ, so read them before paying.

Cotswolds tours from London: frequently asked questions

How long is the journey from London to the Cotswolds?

By direct train from Paddington, Moreton-in-Marsh takes from 1 h 24 min and Charlbury from 1 h 5 min. A coach tour takes a full day. One published program lasts 10 hours.

Which villages do day tours visit?

The two published programs use Burford and Bibury, with Stow-on-the-Wold on one and Oxford on the other. The stops can change by date, so check the page for your tour.

Is lunch included?

Not by default. A two-course lunch in Bibury applies only to the lunch option. On the Oxford program food and drink are not included.

Is a tour or the train better?

A tour is easier on a single day. The train and bus give more freedom but need planning, because the villages are far apart and the buses do not link them all.

Can I cancel a tour?

One program offers free cancellation up to at least 24 hours before departure. Check the terms of the tour you book.
